Manchester United has submitted the official numbers for the 2018/2019 season to the Premier League. Most numbers have remained the same from the previous seasons with the addition of numbers for our summer signings, switches for two existing first-team members, and allocations for four youngsters who were part of United’s pre-season tour. Two Under-23s goalkeepers have also been give squad numbers.
Marcos Rojo has been switched from the number 5 to Michael Carrick’s empty no. 16 prompting some, such as Rio Ferdinand, to speculate that the no. 5 is being left empty for a possible January signing. Sergio Romero has been switched to wearing the no. 22 his previous no.20 shirt available to new defensive acquisition, Diogo Dalot. New goalkeeper Lee Grant will wear no. 13. The no.17, previously worn by Daley Blind before his departure to Ajax, will now be worn by Fred.
The no. 10 shirt which sat empty at the departure of Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been give to Marcus Rashford who has become the first homegrown player to wear the shirt since David Beckham wore is back in the 1996/97 campaign.
Angel Gomes retained the no.47 shirt he wore on his two senior appearances while Tahith Chong takes no.44, Joshua Bohui takes no.46, and Ethan Hamilton takes the no. 48. Goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara has been given the no.45 and Matej Kovar no.51.
The squad numbers will remain as such until the following season. It should be noted that although the transfer window has closed in England, it is still open for a bit longer across Europe meaning that while no player may depart to another Premier League team until January, they can depart to a team in another of Europe’s leagues and leave their previously assigned number empty.
